The combination of the two with the prosecco makes a wonderful grown-up drink. This cocktail is inspired by two of my favourite fruits: I love pomegranate in every possible way peach on the other hand was my favourite fruit as a child (and still is). Cool, strain through muslin into a jug for a few hours and chill.Ģ To make the cocktail, mix 1 part vanilla vodka to 2 parts cordial and 3 parts tonic water, pour into glasses with or without ice, then serve. ![]() Makes enough cordial for 8 drinks For the cordial 400-450g rhubarb, chopped 250g sugar Juice of ½ a lemon 500ml waterįor the cocktails 1 part vanilla vodka (which you can buy, or make by steeping a vanilla pod in good quality vodka for a couple of months) 2 parts rhubarb cordial 3 parts tonic waterġ Put the rhubarb, sugar, lemon and water in a pan, bring to a boil, then simmer until the rhubarb has disintegrated. I’ve been making it regularly ever since, as rhubarb cordial has a wonderful flavour, a brilliant colour and keeps well for a week or so in the fridge we’ve mixed it with gin and cava before now, but this is our favourite creation. There was a recipe for a rhubarb cocktail in the Guardian recently, and as we grow more rhubarb than you can shake a stick at, I tried the cordial from said recipe. Add a handful of mint leaves, then serve. Give this mixture a good shake and strain into two glasses. A grapefruit tea with whiskey from TwinnyDip, filled with bitter and smoky notes, was super-refreshing on a warm day, as was Paddy MacLachlan’s take on the Mexican michelada. Fadime Tiskaya’s pomsecco took a little longer to prepare, but would be a great welcome drink for any guests you might have this summer, the sharpness of the lime and tonic offsetting the sweet peaches, pomegranate and prosecco, something altogether more interesting than the usual bellini. In the first two decades of the 20th century, semaphore traffic signals like the one in London were in use all over the United States with each state having its own design of the device. The first system of traffic signals was installed as a way to replace police officer control of vehicular traffic outside the Houses of Parliament in London on 9 December 1868. ![]() The system is also used for other purposes, for example, to control pedestrian movements, variable lane control (such as tidal flow systems or smart motorways), and railway level crossings. Since then, electricity and computerised control has advanced traffic light technology and increased intersection capacity. The method was first introduced in December 1868 on Parliament Square in London to reduce the need for police officers to control traffic. Although this is internationally standardised, variations exist on national and local scales as to traffic light sequences and laws. The regular traffic light colours are red, yellow (also known as amber), and green arranged vertically or horizontally in that order. Traffic lights consist normally of three signals, transmitting meaningful information to road users through colours and symbols including arrows and bicycles. Summary results (combined from more than one study per test brand) for seven tests met World Health Organization (WHO) standards as ‘acceptable’ for confirming and ruling out COVID-19 in people with signs and symptoms of COVID-19. In people who did not have COVID-19, antigen tests correctly ruled out infection in 99.6% of people with symptoms and 99.7% of people without symptoms.ĭifferent brands of tests varied in accuracy. For people with no symptoms, tests were most accurate in people likely to have been in contact with a case of COVID-19 infection (an average of 64% of confirmed cases had positive antigen tests). This is likely to be because people have the most virus in their system in the first days after they are infected. Tests were most accurate when used in the first week after symptoms began (an average of 82% of confirmed cases had positive antigen tests). In people with confirmed COVID-19, antigen tests correctly identified COVID-19 infection in an average of 73% of people with symptoms, compared to 55% of people without symptoms. Around 60% of studies took place in Europe. Studies investigated 49 different antigen tests. The main results are based on 152 studies investigating a total of 100,462 nose or throat samples COVID-19 was confirmed in 16,822 of these samples. Studies could test people with or without symptoms. People could be tested in hospital, in the community or in their own homes. We looked for studies that measured the accuracy of any commercially produced rapid antigen test in people who were also tested for COVID-19 using RT-PCR. We wanted to know whether commercially available, rapid point-of-care antigen tests are accurate enough to diagnose COVID-19 infection reliably, and to find out if accuracy differs in people with and without symptoms. Faster diagnosis of COVID-19 infection could allow people to take appropriate action more quickly, with the potential to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but it is important to understand how accurate they are and the best way to use them. In many places, rapid antigen tests have opened access to testing for many more people, with and without symptoms, and in locations other than healthcare settings. Currently, COVID-19 infection is confirmed by a laboratory test called RT-PCR, which uses specialist equipment and often takes at least 24 hours to produce a result. People with suspected COVID-19 need to know quickly whether they are infected, so that they can self-isolate, receive treatment, and inform close contacts. They come in disposable plastic cassettes, similar to over-the-counter pregnancy tests. These tests identify proteins on the virus in samples taken from the nose or throat.

He also states that Portuguese arrived in China in 1516, simultaneously introducing maize. I consider these two assertions as positive, in spite of the contrary opinion of some authors." īut the finding of this unique variety of maize suggested a re-examination of the question. The question was considered closed at the end of the 19th century by De Candolle who stated: "Maize is of American origin, and has only been introduced into the old world since the discovery of the new. The discovery in China of a distinct type of maize bears the historical question whether maize was known in the Orient before the discovery of America. Kuleshov, when screening the distribution of maize in Asia, found it in many other places. In 1915, the plant was rediscovered in Upper Burma and in 1920 in the Philippines. He was able to grow 53 plants to maturity and made a thorough characterisation of these plants, including photographs, which were published in a USDA bulletin issued in December 1909. The corn is much more glutinous than the other varieties, so far as I know, and may be found to be of some use, perhaps as porridge." These seeds were planted on May 9, 1908, near Washington, D.C., by a botanist named Guy N. There are several colours, but they are said to be all the same variety. A note with the seeds called it: "A peculiar kind of corn. Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction. Farnham, a Presbyterian missionary in Shanghai, sent a sample of seeds to the U.S. The first mentions of it were found in the archives of the U.S. The exact history of waxy maize is unknown. Please help rewrite it to a more formal, encyclopedic tone. This section uses first-person ( we) inappropriately. Waxy maize yield about 3.5% less than their normal dent counterparts and has to be isolated from any nearby normal maize fields by at least 200 meters. It is coded by a single recessive gene (wx). Geneticists could show that waxy maize has a defect in metabolism precluding the synthesis of amylose in the endosperm. When feeding trials later on showed that waxy maize could produce more efficient feed gains than normal dent maize, interest in waxy maize suddenly expanded. Amylopectin or waxy starch is now used mainly in food products, but also in the textile, adhesive, corrugating and paper industry. Until World War II, the main source of starch in the United States was tapioca, but when Japan severed the supply lines of the U.S., they forced processors to turn to waxy maize. In 1922 a researcher found that the endosperm of waxy maize contained only amylopectin and no amylose starch molecule in opposition to normal dent corn varieties that contain both. As this plant showed many peculiar traits, the American breeders long used it as a genetic marker to tag the existence of hidden genes in other maize breeding programs. The corn was first described from a specimen from China in 1909. Waxy corn or glutinous corn is a type of field corn characterized by its sticky texture when cooked as a result of larger amounts of amylopectin. Of these chemistries, Zinc Carbon and LiFeS2 are the only ones that are purely disposable cells. Primary batteries can be either made of Alkaline, Lithium, Zinc Carbon, or Lithium Iron Disulfide (LiFeS2). D batteries are mostly used in high drain applications such as flashlights, automatic odoriser, paper towel dispensers, transmitters, radio receivers, and other devices with extended running time requirement. D cells were originally known as flashlight batteries. The D-size battery is a dry cell that is cylindrical in shape with electrical contacts at both ends. These cells come as both primary batteries and rechargeable types. These are also larger than the C dry cells. It is also important to note that this arrangement (i.e., batteries in parallel) can potentially damage the batteries if they discharge into each other however, this problem can be mitigated in part by using batteries that are all at the same charge level (e.g., fully charged) or using diodes and small resistors in series with the batteries.D-size or D batteries are quite bigger than the AAA or AA batteries. Since alkaline batteries, regardless of their size (e.e.g, AAA, AA, C, D), all have the same voltage (1.5 V), I realized that I needed to make a AA (or a couple of AA's), of which I had many, fit in the pump in place of the failed D battery.Įlectrically, one AA could do this job since it runs at the same voltage as a D battery. But, lo and behold, one of the D batteries inside the electric pump had leaked, spewing battery acid everywhere inside the pump, and (of course) we had no more D batteries! What to do, what to do. With my parents over for the weekend, and the hour of midnight rapidly approaching, we needed to blow up the ol' air mattress and get to bed. If you ever needed to fit a square peg into a round hole on short notice, then this Instructable is for you! |
